New teachers need constant support in the first few years of teaching. One of the hallmarks of the Teach for the Philippines program is a monthly professional development called "Super Saturday". During these meetings, the Teach for the Philippines Staff and Fellows learn about various topics such as classroom management or differentiated instruction. What is unique about the TFP Super Saturdays is these events are actually open to the public school teachers who are not Teach for the Philippines Fellows. At a meeting with a principal, I was told that teachers crave for professional development and thus, the Super Saturdays of Teach for the Philippines are a valuable experience for everyone. And by the way....TFP does not charge anyone a single centavo to attend.
The Super Saturday on July 18 was held at the Nueve de Febrero Elementary School in Mandaluyong. I was asked to say a few words to introduce the LMU teachers and program. Then there was an "ice breaker" that consisted of a dance. Since it is a Filipino gathering, there has to be singing and dancing!

The Super Saturday took on the form of a World Cafe. There were various "booths" where LMU teachers, TFP Fellows and Staff, and other partners presented on important topics. The LMU presentations were on:
a. Data and tracking
b. Classroom management
c. Differentiated Instruction
d. Group work
The LMU teachers came up with these activities based on needs they identified during their time in the public schools.
Everyone had a great learning experience!
