When I got the mail about the LMU visit here in the Philippines, I was scared. I actually didn’t want that kind of set up. Well, I love meeting new people but I was having problems with my teacher “status” so I really don’t want to put more pressure in my life. I didn’t mind the emails for a while because I really want to focus more on my life as a teacher, and my transition as a grade 3 teacher to becoming a grade 2 teacher. Then, I realize that what if I was in her position and I was very eager to get to know my partner, and my partner’s life. So I emailed Marisa. I thought she was older than me and a little serious that I can’t joke around, since I love laughing.
When I met her, we instantly clicked! I remember talking about dogs, because I know how Americans love dogs, and we both laughed because I hated dogs and she adored them. We connected really fast, we both love hiking and a little dancing for me, but I was enjoying our first day. The teachers, students and even staff loved Marisa, Craig and Brian. In the Philippines, if you look different, they will love you!

My pupils, at first, were a bit uncomfortable because we were speaking in a language they couldn’t understand well yet. I asked Marisa to teach some basic Spanish words so that my pupils can get to know her, and vise versa. After that, my pupils were comfortable with her, that they even tried speaking in English so that they could communicate with Marisa.
Marisa and I realized we see ourselves in each other. We wanted our students to learn, but at the same time have tons of fun. We decided to do Zumba for my PE class, and my pupils went wild because I saw how they love dancing but mostly moving. I also saw how passionate Marisa was with teaching and dancing. I never had a dull moment with her, and I had an amazing time. It’s good to meet someone who has the same passion in Education, and helping others. I feel that I’m not alone in this long journey towards uplifting education in the youth.
Plus, people kept telling me that we look alike! So I am so grateful to have a sister from another country!
